The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Flies that are only tied using one material, besides the hook and thread, are difficult to come by. Especially patterns that work this well. Less id definitely more in the case of the Tron Emerger. There is a suitable substitute for every part of this fly, because it only has one material!
Tail: Olive Antron makes for a fine substitute on this pattern.
Body: Again, Olive Antron makes for a fine substitute on this pattern.
Thorax: Again, Olive Antron makes for a fine substitute on this pattern.
Casing: Again, Olive Antron makes for a fine substitute on this pattern.
Legs: Again, Olive Antron makes for a fine substitute on this pattern.
Because of the limited material list that goes into this fly, there are also limited variations. A common variation is to make the body and thorax two different colors of zelon. Sticking with simple, natural colors is the best plan of action on this bug. Black, brown, and olive are the name of the game. Picky fish beware!
It’s hard to beat a fly that only uses one material, and works as well as this guy. Catching fish, and saving money? Talk about a confidence fly! Even the pickiest trout are often eager to move for a Tron Emerger when the mayflies are out to play. The segmentation created by the twisted zelon on this bug is second to none. It’s one of the most creative, and realistic approaches out there. The wings and tail are also pliable enough to have plenty of in water movement.
A nymph rig, or dry dropper rig is the name of the game with the Tron Emerger. In a nymph rig, fish it as the second or third fly. Having some split shot, or a heavier fly above it is very necessary being that this bug doesn’t have any real weight of it’s own. This can also be a deadly fly when the picky fish don’t seem to take any interest in your dry fly. Tie one of these on behind it, and reach for your net!
