Tying Video
Many patterns with small numbers of materials, such as this one, are difficult to find substitutions for. This little midge has one stand in that won’t mess up the intended look of the fly, or how it fishes. The rest of the recipe should be followed carefully to ensure that the fly comes out correctly.
Body: Opal Mirage Tinsel is a fine substitute for the Flashabou, should it be unavailable to you.
The regular pearl version of this fly is extremely effective, but tying it in red can be deadly too. It all depends on where you are. Some fish really dig red flies, and then again some hate them. If you wanted to add even more flash to this bug, you can replace the peacock herl with ice dub of your color choice. The peacock ice dub looks exceptionally good if you chose to go that route.
Flash, flash, and more flash. That what this pattern really has going for it. It also has a great taper, and highly realistic dimensions. The flash is really what makes this bug stand out though. Fishing small midges in high, dirty water can be a nightmare. The Disco Midge ventures to solve that problem by being a beacon of flashy midge goodness though the murk. It’s a great pattern to tie right before runoff to knock off the winter rust. Easy on the tier, and the wallet.
A nymph rig is the most common place you’ll find this fly, and the most effective. The Disco Midge is a great searching pattern, as well as a wonderful high water pattern. It will work wonders in both categories. Make sure you’ve provided it with some weight, whether that be from a heavier point fly or split shot. If you get it down into the zone, that flashy thing is bound to catch the eye of at least a few fish!
