The RS2 is a fantastic fly that has opportunities for variation in ample amounts. Flash in the wing makes for a great sparkle wing variation and adding a beadhead is a great way to get down deep!

The RS2 is a classic fly that is one pattern every angler should have in their box. This fly is more imitative than many other patterns, so when the mayflies are hatching and active, be sure to tie one of these on! The RS2 catches a lot of fish any time a mayfly species is actively hatching. Anglers should expect the action to be fast and furious upon tying one of these guys onto their line. Specifically focusing on imitating an emerger, the RS2 is sure to catch fish any time mayfly nymphs are trying to emerge. Given how many rivers really contain a wide variety of mayfly species, the RS2 will usually catch fish any time you tie it on; although this pattern may fish best from Spring to Fall.

Be sure to fish the RS2 as the dropper off of a dry fly or as the second nymph on a nymph rig. During an active hatch, the RS2 is best behind a mayfly dry, like a Parachute Adams. Using this dry fly as both a fishing fly and as an indicator for strikes on the RS2 is the way to go when things are active. During periods of low activity, use the RS2 on a nymph rig to find success. Anglers should be sure to “swing” their flies at the end of their cast to best imitate an emerging mayfly.
