Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank, straight eye, dry fly hook
  • Thread: UTC 140
  • Body: Tan and Brown 2mm foam
  • Wing: White McFlylon
  • Legs: Medium Brown Rubber Legs

  • Body: Vary the foam and color for all kinds of different looking hoppers. Try closed-cell foam for a different kind of float that really works.
  • Wing: Try colored yarn to make your Fat Albert Hi-Vis. Deer Hair can make the Fat Albert float a little better too.
  • Legs: Use Crazylegs to really spice things up; don’t forget to pick your favorite color too.
  • Body: Add or remove thread wraps on your foam sections, or tie the first piece of foam down and add a colored underbody with a foam top
  • Wing: Tie a larger or smaller wing for desired visibility. Colored McFlylon can also be a way to increase visibility. Try deer hair for better floatability
  • Legs: Add a set of legs at the back of the fly for extra bugginess. Or take things to the extreme with multiple sets of crazy legs.

The Fat Albert is a really great hopper pattern. This fly is tried and true grasshopper pattern that is sure to bring fish to the surface. Using the Fat Albert, anglers can expect to bring the top 10% of feeding fish out to play. The rubber-legs on this fly add to its movement and really excite trout. Most hopper patterns aren’t this leggy, but trout like buggy-looking legs. Ambush brown trout are sure to blast this terrestrial pattern like crazy, while the Fat Albert can also be used as an indicator for a beadhead nymph. This is a desirable combination for the Fat Albert because of its foam-based qualities that allow this fly to float really, really well regardless of what fly you drop behind it. Being a bigger size of fly also allows the angler to spot it’s location more easily.

Anglers fishing the Fat Albert will probably want to pair this fly with a nymph dropper. Anglers should expect only the top 10% of feeding fish to eat the Fat Albert, so most fish will likely come on the dropper nymph. The extra takes on the Fat Albert are very exciting, but to really put numbers of fish in the net, try a Beadhead Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail beneath your Fat Albert for great success. While the foam in this fly allows it to float well, adding liquid floatant onto this guy before you hit the water will allow for more fishable cast.
