Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Down Eye, Fine Wire, 2X Wide, 2X Short
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Olive
  • Tail: Pheasant Tail, Natural
  • Body 1: Pearlescent Tinsel, Medium
  • Body 2: Small D-Rib, Olive
  • Thorax: Peacock Herl
  • Wing Case: FINO Skin, Black
  • Legs: Krystal Flash, Black

This bug has a mighty fine list of materials. They all work together really well to give us a killer pattern. This is one of those flies that could easily become a favorite, or confidence fly for you. It also has a few solid substitutions. Always a plus for the tier!

Body 1: Opal Mirage Tinsel, or Flashabou, will do a fine job in place of Pearlescent Tinsel.

Wing Case: Thin Skin is a great stand in for FINO Skin.

Although brown and olive are the most common colors to see this pattern tied in, there are plenty of other options. Some stellar color choices are yellow, red, purple, and black. Anything else you can think of is just as likely to catch fish as well. Having a few sizes for different bugs is always a good idea as well. This is a pattern you may want a few weight options in too. If you’re looking for a little bit more flash, try some peacock ice dub on the thorax in place of the peacock herl.

Sloan’s Mighty Mite Baetis is one of those lucky patterns that has a lot going for it. The druability of the d-rib, the flash of the tinsel and wings, and the iridescent sheen of the peacock herl make for an insanely productive pattern. In the Spring and Fall when the BWO’s are out to play, this is always one of the first flies you should be picking out of your box. The weight of the bead is another thing that sets this fly apart from some of it’s similar competition.

Fishing this bug in a nymph rig, or in a dry dropper set up will usually provide great results. If you are tossing a nymph rig at them, make sure this fly is deep. You want it to be getting down quickly! Sloan’s Mighty Mite can also be a wonderful addition to any dry fly. The fish that are weary of eating on the surface will often chose to snag this little guy suspended underneath the dry.
