The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
There really aren’t any substitutions for this fly. With only one specific material, besides the tread and hook, it’s difficult to switch it out for something. The good news is that it’s a super simple pattern to tie, and that one specific material is very easy to come by in most fly shops or online.
You can tie this pattern in just about any color you can find the stretch round rib in. Switching up the rib color, and the thread color can make for some stellar, fish catching combinations. The black thread, and amber rib version is a great go to color. A red version would also be readily eaten up by hungry trout. Try out some crazy colors, you’ll be pleasantly surprised!
No bug activity? High water? Fish just aren’t cooperating? All three? Pull this pattern out of your box, and have your net at the ready. The realistic shape, mottling, and slender profile on this bug is pretty incredible. Some people may not be keen on worm patterns, but this is a fly that anyone can stomach in my opinion. A killer confidence fly for any water, and any skill level of angler.
Fishing this bug closer to the bottom of the river will serve you well. A nymph rig is the most likely home for this fly. To get it down into the feeding zone, and in front of fish you’ll need some split shot or a heavier fly above it. Fish it anywhere, and anytime! It’s right at home in high, dirty water.
