This brightly colored little fly can draw a fish in from a solid distance. It may look like a bit freaky to the traditionalists, but don’t discount it! There are a couple of solid substitutions for this fly, but make sure you stick to the recipe for the body of the fly. That’s really the important part here, and what gives the bug it’s name.

Wing: The wing on this fly can be any sort of synthetic yarn that similar to egg yarn. Antron or Zelon would work well.

Thorax: Superfine Dubbing is a great substitute for the thorax on this bug.

There is no method to the madness that are the colors on the body of this fly. Any four colors of fluorescent thread will do the trick, so feel free to change it up as you see fit. Other than the colors, having a few sizes on hand is the most important variation. After you’ve got a few colors, and sizes in your box that’s a good stopping point on the variations for the Hippie Chick Midge.

The Hippie Chick Midge is a flashy, groovy little bug that can save your freezing tail on a Winter day on the river. It can just as easily save your tail in any other season of the year. This bug pops with color, and has a realistic wing and thorax to compliment the flash. Get the the fly shop and pick up some fluorescent thread to tie up some of these trout snacks!

This is originally a Winter time fly, but fishing it any other time of the year when the midges are present is a worth a shot. A heavy nymph rig is sure to dredge up a few fish from the depths, especially with this flashy fly on it. It is a light fly, so some weight from split shot or heavier bugs is usually necessary to get it down into the right area.
