Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Head: Baitfish fish skull
  • Belly: Zonker color 1
  • Back: Zonker color 2
  • Glue: Tearmender
  • Flash: krystal flash
  • Tearmender can not be substituted, there is nothing that works as well. Some specialty leather glue might work. Super glue dries hard so there isn’t enough movement in the fly.
  • You can use a conehead instead of a fish skull
  • Use whatever flash you want.
  • Tie this fly in different sizes and colors to imitate the baitfish in your area.
  • Olive/white, chartreuse/white, natural/white are some popular combos.
  • Add more flash if you wish.

This fly has incredible movement because of the double zonker strips. The fish skull head is great because it helps get the fly deep. The flowing movement of the zonkers entice strikes and produce fish. This fly can imitate a wide assortment of bait and can be tied in any color.

Take advantage of this heavy fly and get it deep through the runs and next to structure. Vary your retrieval speeds from swinging/ dead drifting in the current with twitches to short fast strips. Once you find a retrieve that works stick with it. You may have to continually change the retrieval speed throughout the day. Change up your retrieve before you change flies.
