Tying Video
Sometimes fishing realistic flies is the best way to catch fish. Fish that get heavily pressured or are naturally weary often eat realistic patterns better than impressionistic or searching patterns. This fly has great movement thanks to the dubbing and the wiggle shank. When stripping the fly or swinging in current the wiggle shank gives this fly a wounded baitfish motion that fish can’t resist. The red gills is of course a trigger for fish as well.
If you wish to use this fly for trout please read “Hermans articulated rainbow” fishing tips.
This will be a how to fish for bass and other warmwater predators though trout will still eat pearch. Tie this fly in any color combination to match your fishery.
Keep this fly next to structure and cover as much as possible. Rocky points, grass, weeds, logs, and overhangs are all things you should be looking for when fishing for ambush predators. use a sinking or sink tip fly line to get this fly next to that structure whether its 2 feet or 10 feet under the water you’ve got to be next to it.
Strip this fly with short quick strips. Often fish will eat baitfish patterns on the pause in between strips. Keep the fly moving erratically and give it long pauses to let fish eat. Most folks want to strip these baitfish too fast especially in current. The materials in this fly allow it to flow without much input from you. Keep your rod tip low and strip until you are sure there is a fish on the hook. Then and only then you can raise your rod tip.
