Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Tail: Zonker strip
  • Body: Chenille
  • Collar/fins: Zonker strip
  • Head: Fish skull sculpin helmet
  • You can use any type of zonker for the tail and fins
  • Use any chenille that you like for the body
  • If you need to get this fly deep wrap the hook shank with .030 non-toxic wire wrap before tying.
  • I also like to tie these in olive/brown.
  • You can add flash if you wish.

This simple sculpin pattern can get deep and has great movement. The zonker tail and fins have lifelike realistic movement underwater. Tie up a few of these in the color combos that match the sculpin and baitfish in your rivers. The sculpin helmet goes on the fly with the hook point up to make the fly ride hook point up. Utilize this and keep the fly low and slow.

Use this fly in the fall when trout are keyed in on baitfish. This usually occurs when there are no hatches happening though big trout will always be on the lookout for a meaty snack. Fish this fly deep through currents, troughs, and around rocks and structure. If your fly is not getting deep enough you either need a longer leader or a sinking tip fly line. Sculpin do not swim really fast, keep your fly speed low with twitches and quick strips. Make the fly look like an easy meal for a big trout. You can also dead drift this fly, try using it under an indicator and put it on the bottom through runs.
