Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Tail: Marabou
  • Wire: Brassie
  • Body: Ice chenille
  • Hackle: Wooly Bugger marabou

  • Use any wire you want but try to keep it smaller than medium size
  • Use any chenille but the point of the krystal bugger is to be flashy
  • You can use ice dubbing instead of chenille.
  • Use any hackle but make sure its large enough to give the fly appropriate proportions.

There are a million variations for wooly buggers but I’ll list a few fun ones for the krystal bugger.

  • Tie in flash with the marabou or instead of the marabou use flashabou.
  • Add some rubber legs in the middle.
  • Add a cone or bead head and wire wrap to get this fly deeper.

This flashy version of a wooly bugger does a great job of grabbing the target’s attention. Use these when it is sunny outside to look like a disco ball coming through the water or you can use them when the water is stained to get the fish’s attention. This one looks a little more like a baitfish than other buggers do because of the flashy sides. The marabou tail and the hackle have great movement while the ice dubbing reflects light in all different directions.

Get this fly to the right depth by either tying with weight, using split shot, or a sinking tip fly line. Fish it the same way you would any other wooly bugger. Vary your retrieve throughout the day to find what works best. Short quick strips might work well in the morning but in the afternoon a long slow strip might work better. So keep experimenting throughout the day. You can also fish this fly as a nymph under an indicator or tight lined through current.

Try tying this one in some smaller sizes for panfish as they work really well.
