Tying Video
Tying tip: Brush out the dubbing with a fine tooth comb or dubbing needle to free the trapped fibers.
The articulated intruder hook keeps fish from short striking this fly. Flies with long tails are prone to getting short struck. The zonker strip tail has great action in the water and the dubbing head breathes in the water because the material is very limp. The heavy eyes on the front adds a great jigging motion to the fly increasing movement and strikes.
Fish this fly when you are not sure what trout are keyed in on. This is a sculpin imitation, sculpin are always present and hatches aren’t always happening. Sculpin live right on the bottom, fish this fly near or on the bottom. You can use sink tip lines, poly leaders, or split shot to achieve this but make sure you get it down. Either strip the fly with quick strips and long pauses or swing through current. Fishing sculpin flies on the swing can be very effective.
