The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
This easy to cast sculpin pattern is the perfect small sculpin imitation. The grizzly effect adds depth and movement to the pattern and the soft hackle flows similar to marabou. The heavy eyes get the fly into the strike zone quick and gets it to the fish’s level.
Sculpin live on the bottom of the rivers, so fish this fly on the bottom. Don’t strip this fly fast through the water column or it will never get deep enough. Cast toward the bank and run this fly downstream through deep holes, pools, rifts, and troughs. Dead drifting works well with this pattern because the materials breathe so well underwater they don’t need stripping inputs. Use mends to make the fly travel where you want it to after the cast. Use a combination of strips, mends, dead drifting, and swinging to catch fish on this fly. Sculpin usually do not swim fast, a short quick strip and then a long pause is the best action for this fly.
