This pattern was originally developed to imitate a caddis, but is one of those bugs that can be a wide variety of things. Although it can suggest lots of insects, there is not lots of substitutions. Frankly, this is just a stubborn bug that is best tied directly off of the recipe.

Color and size are the biggest, and probably only areas of substitutions for this pattern. Changing out the colors of the dubbing, and the hackle, to more closely resemble the bugs where you personally fish will custom tailor your fly box. The original color shown in the video is a solid place to start though. Having two to three sizes on hand while you’re out on the water will lower the chance of a headache day.

The top benefit of this bug absolutely has to be it’s shape shifting ability. Now, the fly won’t actually shape shift obviously, but it does have the knack for imitating many species in the mayfly and caddis arena. It’s an all around fish catcher, no matter where you may be. It also happens to be extremely quick off the vise, so you’ll never have to worry about running out of them, and having to sit down for hours just to have a few more. A classically styled fly such as the Dorato Hare’s Ear is irreplaceable in anyone’s fly box.

Applying some floatant to this fly the night before you plan to fish is a must with this bug. It will float like a cork the next day, even after a few fish are brought to net with it. This pattern is also best fished alone in smaller sizes. Paired with a delicate presentation this bug will do wonders. In a larger size, fishing a dropper off of the dry fly can increase your fish chances big time.
