Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Body 1: Red medium ultra wire
  • Body 2: Zonker rabbit strip
  • Head: Thread
  • Use any color wire you like to got with the zonker strip
  • You can use different sizes of wire but if you go smaller than medium size it will be hard to get touching wraps. If you go larger than medium size it may be too hard to wrap unless you are tying larger sizes.
  • If you are tying a large size wire leech you could use magnum zonker strip
  • If you need some more flash you can add in at the front or rear
  • Tie in any color zonker you want, white makes a great baitfish imitation

This fly has weight from the wire without having a big heavy bead head. This makes this fly easier to cast while still helping it get deep. Zonker strips are one of the most useful materials, the way they flow and pulse in the water is unbeatable. You can tie these in any color and imitate a wide variety of food.
The wire is wrapped on top of the zonker strip, this keeps the hook point riding up.

Use this fly on rivers and shallow lakes where leeches are present. If you’ve tied some in baitfish colors try fishing them any way you would fish a baitfish pattern.

As a leech pattern fish this fly low and slow. Leeches aren’t great swimmers and live near the bottom. When fishing a leech pattern you have to be patient and let the fly sink before giving it any action. Once the fly gets deep use short slow strips to keep the leech on the bottom. Many flies that are supposed to be fished near the bottom will be tied to ride hook point up with lots of weight.
