The articulated hellgrammite is an extremely life like pattern that drives fish nuts. Especially smallies. Some variations you might want to employ are changing colors or using heavier wire in situations where you need to get the fly down in the water column.

Hellgrammites are one of the main food sources for bass and trout when they are present in a river or lake. These big meaty protein packed bugs can grow up to 3 inches long and big fish love them. Big bass and trout alike find the wiggle tail and action of this fly irresistible.

To properly fish this pattern first you must find out if your fishery has hellgrammites. They are commonly found in well oxygenated clean waterways across the U.S. In late spring hellgrammites in huge numbers move out of the water to the river bank and this is the best time to target fish with this pattern. The most consistent technique is to dead drift this fly beneath an indicator but don’t be afraid to let that fly swing at the end of your drift. The wiggle tail on this fly entices some jolting takes so twitching or stripping this fly should not be ruled out.

If you don’t have hellgrammites in your area, you likely have stoneflies and this pattern imitates stonefly nymphs as well.
