The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
Besides the hook, and thread, this fly only consists of tow materials. Unfortunately, no other materials do the job as well or better than the few listed in the recipe. Stay on track with the recipe and the fish will keep coming coming to hand, and your fly will keep floating correctly.
Superfine dubbing comes is a wide variety of colors, so switching that out is the first order of business when your tying up some different variation of this fly. If you want to add a bit of flash to the body, feel free to use ice dub dubbing as opposed to the originally called for superfine dubbing. This fly can sort of stand in for a wide variety of insects. Make your color, and size choices based on what type of bugs are prominent in your area, or just use it a general attractor or search pattern.
Age old patterns, such as the Devil Bug, never go out of style or slid under the rug. The reason they are not forgotten about is because they catch fish consistently! The old saying, “if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it”, applies in full force here. This fly floats like a cork, can look like many different bugs, is easy to tie, doesn’t require crazy material, and the list goes on. It’s hard to find a downside to a fly like the Devil Bug.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Devil Bug is the fact that you can fish it in many different ways. If you are fishing the fly alone try a few different methods to see what the fish key in on. Dead drifting is always a good one, but also attempt the short strip (kind of like a pop), a long strip, and even an sunken stripped fly can do the trick. Don’t worry if a few hairs pop off in different directions after a few fish. That can give the fly some movement, or imitate legs of some sort.
