Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight Eye, Standard Wire, 3X Long, Semi-Dropped Point
  • Bead: Glass, Sized to Hook
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Body: Sulky Holoshimmer, Red
  • Rib: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Thorax: Rabbit Dubbing, Black

Most of this recipe should be followed closely, but there is one worth while substitution to point out. General, all-season midges like this should be an inexhaustible asset in your fly box. Seat the knot, and go set the hook!

Thorax: Superfine Dubbing, or any other dubbing you like that wraps a spare, tight noodle will work. Make sure your colors match up though.

Switching up the color, and size on this fly is the most common way to change it up. The fly has the Deadpool name because it’s red and black, but don’t be afraid to try any combination of colors on the body and rib. You can also switch out the thorax dubbing colors, and even add some ice dub dubbing for a more flashy appearance. Having a few sizes of each variation you tie up can never hurt.

The skinny long body on this fly, paired up with the realistic segmentation makes it real winner. Not to mention that the body has a subtle flash to it that does a great job of attracting attention. The glass bead is another killer touch on this pattern. A glass bead always seems to improve the productivity of a fly. You’ll be able to tie up plenty of these guys in no time at all with so few materials, and steps!

This bug is right at home in a nymph rig. The placement of the fly should be determined by its size, and the size of the other flies in the rig. Generally, you want to go biggest, down to your smallest. This fly doesn’t have much weight of its own, so some split shot may be necessary to get it down to the fish.
