Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Head: Hot head bead
  • Tail: Marabou
  • Body: Sparkle dubbing noodle
  • Use any hook you like
  • Use any dubbing you have for the body
  • Use any color combinations you like for this fly
  • You can tie an egg as the head on the fly instead of the cone
  • Many variants of this fly exist, the mohair leech with this hot head is a favorite

Leeches love to eat eggs. There is some debate whether trout eat egg sucking leeches because it is a 2 for one lunch special or if they instinctively eat them to keep them from eating their eggs. Either way these flies are very productive during spawning season.
This pattern is simple to tie, has some weight built in, and has great movement.

Fish this fly in the fall when fish are spawning. Leeches and eggs are both on the bottom so you have to get your fly there. If the bead head is not getting deep enough you need to add split shot or a sinking fly line to get the fly to the strike zone. Fish this fly on a dead drift under an indicator as a nymph or by slowly stripping it. Leeches already aren’t great swimmers, add the fact that they are carrying and eating an egg and this is not a fast critter. Fish this fly slow and strip set when you feel pressure.
