Tying Recipe
  • Hook 1: Straight shank streamer hook
  • Trailer Wire: 20# mono
  • Hook 2: Octopus hook
  • Tail: Natural zonker pine squirrel
  • Back: 2MM foam
  • Body: Pine squirrel zonkered
  • Legs: Round rubber legs
  • Whiskers: Krystal flash

Tying Tips: Be careful not to cut through the foam with your thread. Use a thicker thread to keep that from happening.

  • Use any wide gap front hook
  • Use an intruder or stinger hook for the rear
  • Use zonker rabbit strip instead of pine squirrel
  • Use any krystal flash you like
  • You can tie this fly in frog colors. That is a very popular option when fishing over grass mats and lilly pads for big bass
  • Add some eyes and ears on top to get more creative
  • Tie them in larger sizes!

The upwards facing rear hook keeps this fly from grabbing grass or logs as you strip it over. The pine squirrel breathes in the water while the tail and legs create lifelike movement. The foam back keeps this fly sitting in the surface film like a real mouse. The pine squirrel is mostly under water where the foam back of the fly is on the surface.

Fish this fly with a heavy floating line, you’ll need it to cast because mouse patterns are wind resistant and can get water logged. . You’ll want to fish this fly off the bank. Cast next too the bank at a downstream angle. Land the fly right next to the bank and with constant quick little strips work the fly toward the middle of the river. Big browns are prone to missing strikes on mouse patterns. The rear hook gives you better odds on hooking up.
