The wonder nymph really can work wonders, but only if it’s tied correctly. Most of this recipe should be followed closely, but there are a few substitutions that pose no threat to the look of the fly. Be delicate with this fly as you tie.

Body: Turkey Biots in Olive will do the job nicely if Goose Biots are unavailable.

Casing: Thin Skin in a similar color will still make a nice casing on this fly.

This fly can be tied in a variety of color schemes to more closely resemble the mayflies in your area, or a specific species. Other than the color variations, this fly is pretty straight forward, and should be kept that way. It fishes like a dream. Be sure to have some size options while you’re out on the water.

The CDC Downey Wonder Nymph is ultra realistic in all aspects. The CDC really gives it that life like factor you look for in an emerger pattern. You can use this pattern as a strict imitation for one bug, or as a loose impression of many different types of emerging mayflies. Get the the vise, and whip some of these bad boys up before your next outing. Your buddies will be asking to borrow one!

This fly is equally comfortable in a nymph rig, or a dry dropper setup. As far as the nymph rig goes, this is a good point fly. Having it as the first fly in the succession will keep it closer to the surface, where you want an emeger pattern. In a dry dropper rig it will be in the same depth range, but you will have the chance to catch a fish on your indicator.
