Tying Video
It’s rare for such a simple pattern, with so few materials, to have good substitution. Luckily this is one of those rare occasions, and this bug does have an acceptable substitution. Don’t underestimate the simple patterns, they often catch the most fish!
Wings: Deer Hair in Tan will work just fine for the wings on this bug.
Besides tying the fly in multiple sizes, there aren’t really any recommended substitutions for this pattern due to it’s simple nature.
Coming across such a simple fly that catches so many fish is not an everyday ordeal. When the fish are eating spent caddis sometimes they will shy away from patterns that are extremely buoyant, and floating high. When that happens you know it’s time to pull out the big guns with the BPS Spent Caddis. Talk about a fly that a fish can get a perfect sip on! There’s no excuse for not having your fair share of these bug in your box because they’re so easy, and cheap to tie up.
The BPS Spent Caddis is best fished alone. Lay the bug down with a subtle cast, put a mend on it if necessary, and then just play the waiting game with that sipping fish you’ve had your eye on. Applying a limited amount of floatant to this fly the night before you plan to fish it will make your day on the water better with one less thing to worry about.
