Tying Video
Hackle tip tails work great for streamers because they have great movement. Bucktail is a popular streamer material because the material is stiff like a baitfish but will flow in current or if stripped hard. There is no built in weight on this fly so it is versatile and provides lifelike movement. A must have for your box. Can be tied in many colors and sizes to match your local baitfish population.
Pick your depth by choosing which fly line you’ll throw this fly on. Floating line will only be useful for very shallow water. Shoals, shallow points, and very shallow stumps are the only places floating line will work well for. Otherwise the fly will be too high in the water column.
Switch to an intermediate or sink tip fly line to really utilize this streamer. Sink tips will allow you to accurately place this fly in different sections of the water column. use these to get next to structure. Rocks, logs, cut banks, and through riffles are perfect places to fish this fly.
Full sinking lines are great for fishing deep water like lakes, ponds, or rivers.
My general advice on baitfish streamers is try to fish them where you see baitfish in the water column. If you don’t see any on top, don’t fish this fly near the surface.
Vary your retrieve, sometimes quick short strips are best and sometimes long slow steady strips might work.
