The Slickwater Caddis is not your traditional caddis pattern, but it does work quite well for the types of fishing it’s designed for. It also has a substitutions for one of the more uncommon materials used in the pattern.

Wing 1: Congo Fibers in Tan can also be used for this part of the wing with no issues.

Depending on the time of year, location, and conditions you’ll want to tie various sizes and colors of the pattern to ensure that all of your caddis bases are covered. A more orange version may be beneficial in October, while more natural colors like brown may be more useful in the late spring or early summer. Whichever colors you chose to have in your box, remember that is is always wise to have a choice of sizes.

The bushy hackle on this fly makes it perfect to swing out at the end of your drift. A skating caddis will often make a fish move, even if it wasn’t doing to move on the bug at dead drift. There’s something about that movement that just makes them go crazy for it. The bright color on the wing also makes this bug easy to spot on the water, so you won’t have to worry about the early morning, or late evening glare off of the water.

This fly doesn’t have much beef on it keeping it up on the surface besides the hackle, so it is best fished alone. As the name suggests, this pattern is impeccable when fished on a big flat to sipping fish. Whether they eat on the drift, or on the skating swing be sure you’re strapped in for a fight that is sure to disrupt the top of that glass like water.
