Tying Video
Most of the components of this fly are best not substituted with sup par materials, but there is one thing we can switch out without any issues at all. This pattern is too simple and effective to not have in your box!
Collar: Black Ice Dub can also be used to create the collar on this bug.
With tying thread, sulky, wire, and dubbing the color combinations are endless. As with any other midge pattern, tying up a slew of varieties is a very effective strategy for being successful out on the river. You’ll want to have a few sizes of each of your chosen color combos as well, just to be safe.
This is a stellar winter fly to lead off those heavy nymph rigs you’ll be throwing. The shimmer and segmentation seal the deal for most of the fish out there. One of the best things about this bug is that of you end up having an unreal day on the water it will hold up. The coating on the fly will help it last fish after fish.
Fishing this bug year round is smart, but there should be an emphasis on the winter months. Whether this pattern is the first, biggest fly or the last, smallest fly in your succession of bugs it should be in the lineup. Some split shot may be necessary to get the bugs down into that deep holding water, but you can also tie this pattern with a tungsten bead to give it a little extra sinking capability.
