Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Down Eye, Fine Wire, 2X Wide, 2X Short
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Olive
  • Tail: Mallard Flank Feather
  • Rib: X-Small Ultra Wire, Copper
  • Casing 1: Flashabou, Pearl
  • Casing 2: 2mm Foam, Tan
  • Legs: Mallard Flank Feather

The Split Foam Back BWO is an ultra effective pattern, and can help you fool the pickiest of fish when the baetis are coming off thick. The even better news is that this pattern has some great substitution options, so hopefully you don’t even need to run to the fly shop to get anything before cranking out a couple of these.

Tail: Wood Duck Flank Feather will get the job done without a problem.

Casing 1: Opal Mirage Tinsel in Small would look great as the flashy part of the casing on this fly.

Legs: Wood Duck Flank Feather will get the job done without a problem.

Although the most popular version of this fly is tied using colors to imitate a BWO, you can also tie and fish this fly very successfully in PMD colors. Having some regular black or brown options in your box won’t hurt either. This is just a killer all around baetis emerger pattern. These bugs can really vary in size, so have some options for the best results.

Other than being extremely simple to tie and requiring very few, easy to find materials, this fly gets suspended in the surface film pretty perfectly. This fly is a dream to fish when you’ve got some stubborn fish on your hands. The slight flash will help get their attention as well, hopefully sealing the deal between you and that fish.

Behind a dry fly is just about the most perfect home you’ll find for this bug. Fish that are having issues committing to the dry will likely be game to take this emerger pattern. The dry fly will help you detect even the most subtle strikes on this little guy.
