The Red Ass Soft Hackle is a blast from the past as far as fly design goes. Nonetheless, it still catches fish in style. This is a super fun fly to tie, and fish. It also has a substitution option, which is always a nice touch.

Thorax: The thorax on this fly will look great when replaced when Prism Dubbing in a similar color. It’s really the flash of the dubbing that’s important.

This pattern is an attractor by nature, and because of that changing colors is always welcome. Matching the thread color to the wire color, as seen in the video, isn’t a have to but it does look nice. Ice dub also comes in a wide variety of colors, so have some fun mixing and matching there as well.

It may look like a fly you saw your grandfather fish when you were a kid, but don’t let that change your opinion of it. There should still be a big spot for these bugs in anyone’s nymph box. This fly is a great option for beginner tiers because of the few materials and easy handling. Like any other attractor pattern, fish just want to eat it, even if it doesn’t make them think it’s some specific bug.

You can dead drift this fly in a nymph rig, or fish it alone on the swing. With that being said, you should always swing it out at the end of your drift if you choose to dead drift it in a nymph rig. This pattern is a nice point fly, but may need some split shot to get it down.
