Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Jig Style, Straight Point, Medium Wire, Extra Long Needle Point, Barbless
  • Bead: Brass or Tungsten Slotted, Sized to Hook
  • Weight: .010 Lead Free Wire
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Olive
  • Tail: Coq De Leon
  • Body: Peacock Herl
  • Rib: Small Ultra Wire, Gold
  • Legs: India Hen Hackle, Dark Brown
  • Wings: Goose Biots, White
  • Collar: Gray Squirrel Dubbing, Natural

This pattern is just a slightly simplified version of the original pattern, plus the fact that it’s tied on a jig hook. We’ve got some room for substitution on this one, so you’ll want to take a look if you don’t have all of that on hand at the moment.

Tail: Although the tail on this fly is supposed to be more sparse, you can still go old school and use Brown Goose Biots.

Rib: Small Oval Gold Tinsel can be wrapped as the rib on this fly without a problem.

Legs: Natural Partridge looks pretty solid as the collar on this bug.

Wings: White Turkey Biots will do the trick for you if the Goose is nowhere to be found.

Collar: Natural Hare’s Mask Dubbing is an awesome choice in place of the Squirrel.

This pattern is already sort of a variation in and of itself, but you can still change up a few things. If you’d like to add some more flash you can replace the collar material with ice dub, prism dubbing, or simi seal dubbing. Just make sure to brush it out as shown in the video. You can also skip the natural legs and use round rubber legs or spanflex for a bit of a different look. It pays off to have a few different sizes and weight classes in these jig style patterns too.

To improve on the the ever so popular prince nymph is a tough task. This bug was up to it in more ways than one. First off, the fly rides hook point up, so there’s less snagging the bottom involved when you’re fishing deep. Secondly, the jig style is simpler and more sparse than the original. That makes this pattern super easy on the tier. Your vise is just sitting there waiting, load up on some of these!

Jig style flies make killer point flies in a nymph rig, especially when there is as much weight on them as this one has. This bug can also be utilized efficiently off the back of a a big dry fly throughout the Summer months. If you are into tightline or modern nymphing methods, this should be a go to bug for you as well!
