Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Perfect Bend, Down Eye, 1X Fine, 2X Long
  • Thread: Veevus 6/0, Red
  • Under Body: 2mm Thin Foam, Pink
  • Over Body: 2mm Thin Foam, Tan
  • Wing: Deer Hair, Natural
  • Hot Spot: 2mm Thin Foam, Orange
  • Legs: Round Rubber Legs, Yellow Grizzly Barred

Foam, foam, and more foam! This bug will stay on top all day long with all of that flotation power. Everything on this bug should be kept as it is on the recipe, with the exception of one possible substitution if need be.

Wing: You may also use Natural Elk Hair for the wing on this fly.

This fly is deemed the Pink Pookie for obvious reasons, but can absolutely be tied in other colors. In fact, we always encourage having a few colors of any fly you choose to tie. It just increases your chances of having just the right thing. This fly will wear olive, yellow, and tan pretty handsomely as well. When you’re tying your different colors, don’t forget to have various sizes too.

The Pink Pookie is much less involved on the vise than lots of the other hopper patterns out there which makes it a favorite for many. It may be quicker and easier to tie, but it doesn’t compromise on performance. Early summer when the hoppers just start to steadily come off is when this guy will shpw it’s true colors and put fish in your net. Tie a few on the long days of runoff to prepare yourself for warmer weather!

Fishing this bug whenever hoppers are present is a good plan, but you’ll really want to hit it hard with this fly early in the season. The fish seem to feel something fierce toward this bug during that time of the year. It’s able to be thrown alone and in a hopper dropper type rig. When you toss it around by itself be sure to hug the banks tightly for the most action. In a hopper dropper rig you’ll want to do the same, but fish slightly further toward the middle of the river to avoid getting that nymph into a sticky situation.
