Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Large gap saltwater
  • Eyes: Dumbbell
  • Tail: Orange ice dubbing
  • Body 1: White chenille
  • Claws: Grizzly hackle
  • Body 2: Tan EP
  • Legs: Rubber legs
  • Shell: Deer hair
  • Use a hook specific for your targeted species
  • Any eyes will work that get you to the right depth
  • You can use any hackle you have for the claws
  • Tie in any colors you like
  • Any rubber legs work
  • Add some more blue components, either EP or rubber legs
  • Add some flash in the deer hair
  • Tie in more weight if you need to get the fly deeper

This fly can get to the bottom quick with it’s inverted dumbbell eyes. This also keeps the hook point riding up so you shouldn’t get hung up as often. The EP creates a great crabby profile on the bottom while the legs and deer hair create realistic movement.

Crab patterns require some patience to effectively fish them. Perform a tight line cast and land the fly as gently as possible. Wait until the fly is on the bottom to begin stripping/retrieving. Use very short quick strips to jump the fly along the bottom, ~3″ strips work well. Keep stripping until you feel pressure and remember to strip-set the hook!
