The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
This pattern can save your tail with it’s tail, especially on picky tailwater fish. With that being said, it is best to keep this pattern tied according to the original recipe. There is a few substitutions that you are welcome to take advantage of though.
Legs: Black Zelon will do the trick quite nicely for the wing on this fly.
Thorax: Prism Dubbing in a similar color is the next best thing for the thorax on this bug.
Changing the color and size on this fly are by far the most important variations. Some colors that you shouldn’t be caught without are black, purple, olive, red, white, and brown. Those should cover most of your bases when you go to pull this fly out. Whichever of the colors you choose to tie, also make sure you have size options for each of them.
The Extended Body Midge is a must have fly for anyone who plans to fish to stubborn fish, particularly tailwater fish. There never ceases to be days when you just can’t get the fish convinced to take that bug. The answer to your problem is this little guy right here. Throwing something a bit different at them can really seal the deal. Plus, with this pattern being so easy to tie, there’s no reason not to have them in your box!
Fish this fly at the bottom of a nymph rig in the smallest size you can with respect to the natural bugs in the waterway. It will need some heavier flies, split shot, or both to help get it down into the zone. Watch that indicator closely, it’ll be dunking under soon!
