A pattern like this one is best left alone as far as substitutions are concerned. This fly will serve you much better if it is tied the way it is laid out in the recipe, and on the video. Fish love this little bug just the way it is!
Patterns that can be so many different insects with just a slight color change are few and far between, but we’ve got one here that can do just that. This fly can be almost any species of mayfly you want, almost anywhere you’d want to fish it, at almost anytime of year. Take a look at the natural bugs you’re wanting to imitate and change body colors with a different shade of superfine dubbing, and wing colors with a different shade of deer hair if necessary.
By far the most key benefit to this bug is it’s ability to be so many mayfly species with slight color changes. You can knock out your whole mayfly dry fly list with only one pattern if you really wanted to. This bug is also simple to tie, and can be tackled by pretty much everyone. The natural proportions of this pattern make it a hard to pass up meal for most trout.
Fishing this fly alone is the best way to ensure it’s going to drift and float correctly. A soft presentation on the seams of a run, or in the nervous riffle water is sure to entice a few fish, if not more than a few. You can fish a small dropper off of it too if you’d like. A small, lightweight emerger pattern works great for that.
