You can sub in different colors and match the tail and do flourescant pink, green or more natural colors as desired.
you can add rubberlegs to the head of the fly as well for more of a stonefly imitation that does well.
This fly is a standard now in the euro-nymphing fly selection arena. Incorporating simplicity, proper weight and thin profile, the pattern sinks fast while keeping good movement due to the soft hackle that draws the fish in. The blowtorch tail is a great attractor element that works well as an anchor fly in a 2 or 3 fly set up. Best fished in tandem with another fly in most cases, it will often yield as many trout as the more imitative patterns you have on your rig. If you euro nymph, it’s one of those top 10 flies you should carry in your box. Make sure to have a few different sizes and color options and keep a half dozen to full dozen in your box when you’re ready to use them.
This is fished like any other nymph in a strike-indicator set up or in a euro nymph (tightline) set up where no indicator is used. It works great in both. Spend some time learning how to euro nymph (tightline) and you’ll be able to see why this fly has value beyond the others.
With that said, I’ve found the best tip for this fly is to use it as the first or second fly in a 2 or 3 fly rig. Don’t make it the bottom fly in your rig, let that be an imitative pattern like a zebra midge or mercury baetis. This fly is heavy and works well as an anchor fly, which is the first fly in a 2 fly rig and the 2nd fly in a 3 fly rig. This will get down deep and drift hook point up keeping it from getting snagged on the bottom and getting a good drift consistently.
