The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
Tying Video
This fly is simple in design allowing for a lot of variations. The easiest way to variate on this pattern is with a thread and dubbing color change. If you’re looking to imitate lighter mayfly nymphs like a BWO, then olive thread and dubbing will do the trick.
I recommend yellow, olive and purple as 3 good color variations as a start.
You can also add some legs to the head portion of the fly. Small rubberlegs, or Krystal flash for legs gives a nice look that I really like.
This fly is great tied as a jig-style or regular style nymph and due to it’s few materials used, is budget-friendly and a great fish catcher. You can substitute different materials if you can’t get woodchuck and then have different colors in the pattern making it a fly that has many variations. The woodchuck standard materials are great for dark or murky waters or on cloudy days. Tie it in a few sizes and keep them ready in your box, you’ll quickly find it to be one of your favorites.
This pattern fishes well the majority of the time, however, finding murky waters or cloudy days will often help this pattern outperform others. It thrives when it can out-contrast the water and become highly visible.
Fish this fly in a 2 nymph set up or as a dropper in a dry dropper set up for the best results.
