Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Jig style hook size #10-#18
  • Thread: UTC 140 denier purple
  • Tail: Krystal flash fibers UV tan
  • Underbody: UV ice dub purple
  • Overbody: 2mm craft foam purple
  • Legs: Medium barred purple round rubber legs
  • Wing: Polypropylene floating yarn white
  • Hook: Standard dry fly hooks will work perfectly fine if you don’t have jig hooks, down eye preferred.
  • Thread: Any medium to small diameter thread will work fine, color to match body.
  • Tail: Krystal flash is the preferred tail. This is primarily an attractor pattern, so natural tailing materials might not be the best here.
  • Underbody: Any dubbing to match the color of the foam will perform well.
  • Overbody: 2mm or 1mm foam is needed.
  • Legs: Any medium sized rubber legs will work.
  • Wing: McFlyon para post wing will work well with this pattern.

This fly is fairly simple, with few materials to change up, but it can still be a great fly to play around with to get the exact fly you want. For more visibility and buoyancy, try using the standard chubby chernobyl double wing post! For a bit of a hot spot, try using red floss in the middle of the body, similar to a royal wulff for a bit of added attraction. For a fly that really floats, add hackle in between the legs, which also may help get those rubber legs spread out better.

This fly works very well when the normal sized chubby chernobyls and other terrestrial patterns are a little too big and noisy for the trout. You also might find increased success in small alpine streams where the trout are not as large, as this pattern is easier for them to get their mouths around. Despite the size reduction, this fly can still float high on the surface of the water and still carry some heavy beaded nymphs for your dry dropper rigs. Being smaller than the average terrestrial, this fly can also be loads of fun to have trailing off a larger terrestrial in a double dry rig during the heat of the summer when trout are keying in on big dries!

This fly fishes very well as a main attractor fly, especially when the trout are either shying away from the larger terrestrials, or just can’t seem to fit the fly in their mouth. If fishing this fly as a single dry, try to slap the fly down on the water to get the trout looking at your fly, the way a larger terrestrial might land in a normal cast. The smaller size of this fly allows it to imitate a much larger spectrum of terrestrial insects that are along the river bank, making it a producer even in those dog days of the summer, when trout have seen too many size #8 morrish hoppers and full sized chubby chernobyls. Don’t be afraid to give this little guy a twitch as soon as it hits the water to really stimulate those rubber legs to look even more like a scared terrestrial bug getting swept into the water.
