Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Scud/nymph hook 1x gape medium wire size #14
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier olive
  • Body: Veevus body quill brown coated with clear UV resin for durability
  • Wing: Elk body hair
  • Collar: Wapsi natural fur dubbing pine squirrel
  • Hook: Use any dry fly hook you would like, straight eye or down eye.
  • Thread: Any thin dark thread will work, go as thin as you are comfortable, and try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Body: For a flashier body try using holographic tensile, for a more natural looking fly, superfine dubbing can work great and make the fly even buggier.
  • Wing: This is an upgraded elk hair caddis, elk body hair is the best for this.
  • Collar: Use any spikey or long stranded dubbing you like. Squirrel dubbing and beaver dubbing is great due to the guard hairs in the dubbing.

Since this fly is basically an updated elk hair caddis, there really is not much that you can’t do to this fly to make it even more of an elk hair caddis. Consider adding some tan dry fly hackle to the collar to really get this fly to ride high on the water, or some dubbing in replacement of the body quill for an even buggier fly. Get down and dirty with this messy fly!

This fly is a great caddis dry that will float all day long due to the amount of dubbing and elk hair in it. A simple quick tie that can produce fish day after day of use. Upsize this fly to a size 12 if you want to fish a weighted dropper behind it, or keep it at a 14 or 16 for a great dry to weightless emerger pattern for those thick caddis hatches. This is a great pattern to have in your back pocket for a change up on those heavily pressured waters where the trout see standard elk hair caddis patterns all day long.

The best part about fishing caddis flies is the explosive eats that comes with them. Float this fly as high as you can on the water, as caddis will skim the surface of the water as they fly around. If you decide to put a green hotspot on the bottom of this fly, consider skating this dry fly across a slow moving hole for some great swing action. Dead drift it, swing it or strip it, as long as the fly is floating its going to get hit.
