Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Rear: size 6 Mustard Streamer, front: Mustad Stinger Size #1
  • Tail: Marabou olive
  • Body:  Hen saddle olive
  • Flash: Ripple Ice Fibre olive
  • Articulation wire: 25 pound test braid
  • Collar: Elk Hair olive
  • Head: 6MM Flymen Flymask
  • Hook: Use any down eye streamer hook you like, I personally find that straight eye hooks for rear hooks have more movement than down eye hooks in articulated streamers.
  • Tail: Marabou is a preferred material for tails, but craft fur can be a good substitute.
  • Body: Roster saddle hackle can substitute hen saddle here.
  • Flash: Use your favorite flash. Flashabou is always a great material to use.
  • Articulation wire: Braid is a great material to use as it is not as stiff as some other materials. If you don’t have braid, thick mono can work as well. Keep in mind that this is keeping the fly together so don’t go too light.
  • Collar: Body deer hair can substitute here.
  • Head: If you don’t have masks, you can build a head with UV resin or 2-part epoxy.

A nice way to cut down on the length of tying this fly, and some of the expense, is to palmer pine squirrel strips for the body. If pine squirrel is too small, rabbit strips are also great. For a fly that will push more water, try spinning a deer hair collar and head to really get those lateral lines triggered in murkier water. Rubber legs are always good on streamers!

This is a great pattern for streamer fishing any river or lake size for cold water and warm water species. The weightless aspect really gets this fly moving in the water. This pattern utilizes Flymen fish masks, which makes finishing this fly a breeze, and adds a little more realism to the streamer. The eyes on this pattern give those predatory fish something to lock in on as well.

If fishing this pattern in warmer water temperatures, give this fly a quick and jerky retrieve for better action from the streamer. In cooler water slow the retrieve down or swing it with the current. Fish this fly on a sink tip for fishing deeper water, or add lead-free weight to the fly when tying.
