Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Dry fly 1x wide standard wire down eye
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier black
  • Body: Wapsi natural hair hares mask
  • Wing: Woodchuck
  • Hackle: Dry fly hackle dark barred dun
  • Hook: Any dry fly hook will work, down eye or straight eye.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work. Go as thin as you are comfortable with, but try not to go over 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Body: Any natural brown or tan dubbing will work.
  • Wing: Woodchuck is a great material, but elk hair is a great wing for this fly as well.
  • Hackle: Choose your favorite dry fly hackle in dark barred dun.

This is a great natural fly, but if you want it to stand out feel free to add some flash to it. A great way to do this is to wrap some UTC mirage opal tinsel up the body similar to how you would do wire. This makes a great flashy body, without over doing it too much. If you want more of a synthetic fly, feel free to replace the wing with brown polypropylene!

This is a great caddis imitation that is all natural materials and a really straight forward tie. If you’re looking for a simple fly that won’t take any time to fill a row in your box, this is the one. It has a great profile in the water, and a really suggestive shape that will fool trout.

Caddisflies are some of the most energetic aquatic flies in rivers. Especially during the adult stage, you can see them zipping around the surface of the river in quick erratic motions. This allows the angler to fish these flies with ease, as a perfectly dead drifted fly is not required. If fishing the barrier zone between riffle and pool, consider swinging the fly across the pool section at the end of the drift.
