Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Nymph 2x long down-eye straight shank size size #16
  • Thread: Veevus 12/0 black
  • Tail: Wood duck flank feather
  • Body: Pheasant tail
  • Rib: Ultra wire small copper
  • Wing case: Pheasant tail
  • Thorax: Pine squirrel skin zonked tan
  • Glue: Head cement
  • Hook: Any straight shanked hook will work. Down-eye or straight-eye will both work great.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work fine. Try not to go over 8/0 or 70 denier as this will cause too much build up in the body and the proportions will be off.
  • Tail: If you don’t have any wood duck, pheasant tail will work great. Coq-de-Leon is a great substitute that will be quite a bit stronger.
  • Body: Pheasant tail is required.
  • Rib: Any small round wire will work.
  • Wing case: Pheasant tail is preferred, but if you want a bit of a stronger wing case, thin skin is a great material.
  • Thorax: Squirrel or beaver dubbing with the guard hairs still in will achieve close to the same look.

With a bit few more steps in this pattern than the normal pheasant tail, this adds some room to get creative with this pattern. With the double layer of pheasant tail in the body, consider using dubbing for the bottom layer for some extra bugginess. This pattern can be tied with or without a bead head, so if you’re fishing deep holes add one on! For more of an mayfly emerger add a turn or two of a partridge feather as a nice collar, just remember to not crowd the eye.

Much like the original pheasant tail, this fly is an instant classic. The fact that it has a bit more bulk to the body and thorax makes this a great murky water fly. It will displace a bit more water, and have a bit more contrast in the darkness compared to the standard PT. This is a great pattern to have fun with while tying, so get creative and make some great flies!

Fish this like you would any other pheasant tail nymph. This fly will work great as the tag off of an indicator or euro nymph rig, and also work off the back of a dry fly for a nice dry dropper rig. If you want to fish this fly single, consider adding weight to the fly, or a split shot 2-3 inches above the fly to get it down.
