Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Natural bend 2x long 2x wide size #14
  • Bead: Tungsten bead 3mm gold
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier olive
  • Tail: Pheasant tail
  • Body: Krystal flash peacock with pheasant tail over the back
  • Rib: Ultra wire brassie sculpin olive
  • Wing case: Kiley’s nymph skin black
  • Thorax: Ice dub brown olive
  • Wing: Rooster saddle hackle grizzly dyed olive
  • Glue: Clear UV resin
  • Hook: Any longer nymph hook will work. Try not to go too long, straight-eye or down-eye will work equally as well.
  • Bead: Tungsten or brass standard beads will work. Gold is preferred.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work. Go as thin as you are comfortable with, but try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier. Match the color of the thread to the color of the thorax.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is needed, as the tail and the back of the body is the same feather. If tying smaller bugs, smaller feathers like wood duck may work.
  • Body: Any flash will work here, just be sure it is something you can wrap up the shank of the hook.
  • Rib: Any round wire in a brassie or small size will work.
  • Wing case: Thin skin is a great synthetic substitute. Pheasant tail is a great natural wing case.
  • Thorax: Use any dubbing you like.
  • Wing: Rooster saddle is needed for this pattern. Use any brand of your choice.
  • Glue: Any head cement will work.

This is a fun fly to play around with because there is so much to do with it. For a more natural pattern, try using dubbing for the underbody instead of flash for a little more bugginess. Another way to do this is to add a turn or two of some partridge feather around the collar for a great soft hackle pattern.

This is a great clear water fly that has some great natural looking qualities, and attractor qualities with the mostly flash body. The thinness of the body will get the fly to the bottom, and look a little more like the thinner naturals found in late summer and early fall. The saddle hackle for the legs give a great buggy impression that will fool trout anywhere. Have some fun with this pattern, add your own twist and own it!

This fly fishes best as the dropper in you dry dropper rig, as it will work well in the summer, when trout are either eating terrestrials or nymphs under the surface to get the best energy spend/energy gained ratio. This doesn’t mean it won’t work under an indicator, or as the tag fly in a euro rig though! Get this fly with your best dead drift through a riffle and hold on tight.
