Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook size #16
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 3mm
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier tan
  • Tail: Coq-de-Leon medium pardo
  • Body: Veevus body quill tan coated with thin clear UV resin
  • Rib: Ultra wire small black
  • Wing: CDC feather natural dun
  • Collar: Wapsi natural fur pine squirrel
  • Hook: Any jig hook will work fine. If you don’t want a jig fly, standard hooks will work.
  • Bead: Be sure it’s a slotted bead for a jig hook, standard bead for standard hooks. Brass or tungsten will work.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work. Go as thin as you are comfortable with, but try not to go over 8/0 or 70 denier. Match the color to the body.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is always a good tailing material. Coq-de-Leon is a bit stronger and thinner.
  • Body: Feel free to just have a thread body here, or a small, small amount of dubbing.
  • Rib: Any small round wire will work.
  • Wing: CDC feathers or puffs are required for this fly.
  • Collar: Any spikey natural dubbing will work. Try hares mask or beaver too!

As with most flies, the color options are endless. This fly already has a lot going on with it, so try not to add many more materials. A micro dubbing body will give the fly a bit more bugginess, but try not to over-do it, as this is a thick fly already. For a bigger wing, try adding a few turns of CDC, partridge, or hen saddle just above the wing for extra fluff. This is a good option if you don’t have any spiky dubbing!

This is a great fly to have in your box during mayfly hatches. Unlike most jig flies, this fly represents an emerging mayfly. This fly fishes great in tailwaters and freestones alike. However, the fact that it preforms well in tailwaters makes it deserve a spot in any dropper box. With a large bead and the jig hook hardware, this fly will find the bottom, but won’t find that snag in your favorite hole.

Fish this like any other jig fly, but the nice part about this fly is that it doesn’t have to be perfectly dead drifted. This is great for the beginner angler, as it is alright, and sometimes can work better if the fly moves a little bit. Fish this as the point fly off of a euro rig, the lead or tag fly on an indicator rig, or as the dropper on a dry dropper. If you choose to throw this on a dry dropper, be sure the dry can hold up a fairly large amount of weight due to the size of the tungsten bead on this fly.
