Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Waddington shank 25mm with an intruder style size #4 stinger
  • Thread: UTC 140 black
  • Eyes: Bead chain eyes medium gold
  • Tail: Pine squirrel zonker barred rust
  • Body: Angora goat dubbing ginger, pine squirrel zonker barred rust, palmer chenille medium root beer
  • Legs: Sili-legs perfectly barred brown
  • Head: Cross cut rabbit zonker black
  • Articulation wire: 80# maxima braid
  • Hook: If you don’t have shanks, you can use a normal hook, and break the bend off to just use the shank. Octopus hooks are great substitutes for true intruder style hooks.
  • Thread: Use any medium diameter thread that you like. 6/0 or 140 denier works best, as it won’t break in dubbing loops, and won’t build too much bulk along the body.
  • Eyes: Dumbbell eyes can substitute for bead chain eyes, but may add a little weight to it.
  • Tail: Pine squirrel zonkers work best. For larger flies, rabbit zonkers can work.
  • Body: Use any longer fibered dubbing you like. Arizona simi-seal is a great replacement for angora in streamers. Pine squirrel zonkers work the best for the next part in the body, as it is the tail section as well. Use any longer fibered chenille that you like. Polar chenille works great.
  • Legs: Use any rubber legs that you like.
  • Head: Any rabbit zonker will work. It is going to be in a dubbing loop so cut does not matter.
  • Articulation wire: Use any wire that you like. This is the main thing that is going to be holding the fish to your line, so make sure it is strong enough to hold. Braid works great, as it is more supple than others.

As with most streamers, you can tie this in any colorway imaginable. This is also a streamer that can be fun to change out some of the synthetic materials to get some great flash and movement. Try switching up the chenille for longer fibered chenille like polar flash, or aqua veil chenille to get some more flash and movement from the longer fibers. For a larger streamer, upsize the shank and use rabbit zonkers to fill.

This is a great swing variation of a basic pine squirrel leech. The smaller size allows this fly to be fished in a variety of water types for many different fish, including salmon and steelhead. This fly can also be fished like a regular streamer with a strip retrieve and be deadly for warm water fish as well.

Fish this fly with a standard swing style approach by casting across and down at a 45 degree angle against the bank. If fishing across multiple currents, it may help to thrown an upstream mend to ensure the fly stays in the zone for as long as possible. If fishing this like a standard streamer, a standard strip retrieve will work. Slow it down in colder water temperatures, and speed it back up when the water gets warmer.
