Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig hook size #14
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten bead 3mm gold
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier yellow olive
  • Tail: Teal barred flank yellow
  • Body: Veevus body quill BQ13 or amber yellow color covered with clear fluorescing UV cure resin
  • Rib: Spanflex barred with a sharpie or other permanent marker
  • Thorax: Hemmingway’s czech nymph dubbing black mixed with gold olive
  • Wing case: Goose biots black
  • Legs: Teal barred flank yellow
  • Hook: Use any jig nymph hook that you like. Standard hooks can work with this pattern as well.
  • Bead: If using a jig hook, slotted beads are a necessity, if using standard nymph hooks, standard beads will work.
  • Thread: Use thin diameter thread for this pattern. The thinner the better. Try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is always a good nymph tail. Wood duck flank is a great substitute here that will have the same barring effect. For something a bit stronger, try Coq-de-Leon.
  • Body: Thread bodies can work great here. If you don’t have UV cure glue, head cement can work fine.
  • Rib: Small round wire can work great here.
  • Thorax: Use any short or medium fibered dubbing that you like here.
  • Wing case: Thin skin can be a great synthetic substitute. Pheasant tail is a great wing case as well.
  • Legs: Use the same material for the legs as you used for the tail.

This can be a fun little jig pattern to tie up in different colors and styles. For more of an emerger style pattern, add either a few wraps of a partridge feather or CDC for a great soft hackle pattern. With the goose biot wing case, you can add a piece of razor foam colored either olive or yellow underneath the goose biots for a great crack-back pattern that imitates the beginning stage of emergence for mayflies.

This is a unique little jig fly that is impressionistic of almost every mayfly species out there. This is a great little summertime nymph pattern to trail underneath your favorite dry fly. This fly also makes a great point fly for a euro rig. The jig hardware allows the angler to fish this pattern deep without having to worry too much about snagging the bottom, as the hook point rides up.

Fish this pattern deep along the bottom of the river in any way. Either fished under an indicator, euro nymphing, or under a dry fly. Try to get the best dead drift possible for best results.
