Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Standard jig nymph hook size #14
  • Bead: Slotted tungsten 3mm copper
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier brown olive
  • Tail: Coq-de-Leon
  • Body: Turkey biot blue wing olive
  • Rib: UTC ultra wire small black
  • Wing: CDC feather
  • Collar: SLF squirrel spiky dubbing natural fox
  • Hook: Feel free to use any jig nymph hook that you like. Standard hooks can also work for this pattern.
  • Bead: Slotted beads are required for jig hooks. Standard beads if you use a standard nymph hook.
  • Thread: Use any thin diameter thread that you like. The thinner the better, and try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is always a good nymph tail. Wood duck flank or teal can give that mottled look as well.
  • Body: If you want to keep that ribbing effect, try some vinyl rib or some midge tubing.
  • Rib: Use any small round wire that you like.
  • Wing: CDC works best here, but a turn or two of a partridge feather can work just as well.
  • Collar: Use any natural dubbing that you like. Squirrel and beaver dubbing work well.

This fly already has a lot going on with it. Especially with the soft hackle plus dubbing combination collar, and the biot and wire combination for the body. Feel free to substitute materials as you like though. D-rib or midge tubing can make a great synthetic body, or magic quills can create a colorful body that still has ribbing effects.

This is a very general mayfly emerger pattern that can imitate just about any mayfly species. This is a great fly to have as a dropper in the summertime when many different species of mayflies are present. The jig hardware allows this fly to ride hook point up, which makes it less prone to snags, so you can fish it close to the bottom with confidence.

Fish this like any other mayfly nymph, either as the point fly under and indicator or on a euro nymph rig, or under your favorite dry fly. With this being more of an emerger pattern, a perfectly dead drift is not necessarily required. Even adding a little swing to the end of a drift could get a fish to chase the fly.
