Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Czech nymph hook size #16
  • Weight: Lead free round wire .015
  • Thread: UTC 70 denier brown
  • Body: Hemmingway’s czech nymph dubbing cactus green
  • Backing: Scud back 1/8″ clear
  • Ribbing: 6x monofilament tippet
  • Thorax: Hare’s ear dubbing black
  • Special tools: Sharpie black
  • Hook: Any curved nymph or scud hook will work fine for this pattern.
  • Weight: If you don’t want to put wire in this fly, bead heads can work just as well. Be sure to use a black bead for realism.
  • Thread: Any thin diameter thread will work fine. The thinner the better, and try not to go thicker than 8/0 or 70 denier.
  • Body: Use any green dubbing that you like
  • Backing: Thin skin can work great too.
  • Ribbing: Small round wire can work great here for a little bit of shine, or contrasting colors.
  • Thorax: Any natural black dubbing can work great here. Try squirrel or beaver.

This pattern can get as complicated or as simple that you want it to be. A cool thing to do here for the body is to add some glass beads in between wraps of dubbing for some shine, as most caddis pupae are shiny bugs. For extra realism, try adding a few strands of deer hair cut short in between the body and thorax for some great little pupa legs.

This is a great little realistic caddis pattern that can be great to use for all types of trout water, from selective tailwater trout, to large freestones and small headwaters. This is also a simple tie, so this allows you to tie up a few and still have time to get out on the water at the end of the day.

This is a great trailing nymph pattern to use behind an attractor on an indicator rig, or as the tag on a euro rig. This can also be a great fly to use in shallow water dry dropper situations. Since caddis are among the most active bugs in stream environments, a perfectly dead drifted fly is not absolutely needed.
