Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Curved scud/nymph hook size #10
  • Bead: Tungsten 1/8″ black nickel
  • Thread: Uni 6/0 red
  • Tail: Pheasant tail
  • Body: Rainbow scud dubbing
  • Rib: Vinyl rib midge black
  • Thorax: Rainbow scud dubbing
  • Wings: Black goose biots
  • Hook: Any curved nymph/scud hook will work fine.
  • Bead: Any standard brass or tungsten bead will work.
  • Thread: Thinner diameter thread works best for nymphs. Go as thin as you like with this one, but try to keep it no thicker than 6/0 or 140 denier.
  • Tail: Pheasant tail is always a great nymph tailing material. However, if you are looking for something a bit stronger than this, try some Coq-de-Leon.
  • Body: Use any rainbow colored dubbing you like.
  • Rib: Small or medium round wire can replace vinyl rib here.
  • Thorax: Use the same dubbing for the thorax that you used for the body.
  • Wings: Goose biots work best here.

Since this is an attractor pattern, feel free to have some fun with this pattern. Add some rubber legs to the thorax for some movement, throw a couple of turns of CDC or partridge, or both for a great soft hackle. The options are endless for this fly so get creative and see what you can come up with!

This is a great attractor fly for when the water starts to turn a bit off-colored, or even in full-blown runoff season. The red shades in this fly also allow this fly to be a bit of an egg imitator for those spring-time rainbows.

This fly works best as the lead fly on an indicator rig in off-color water. Tie this on first, then tag a more natural fly off the back of it, so the fish has another option to eat when it comes to inspect this fly. Get the best dead drift possible when fishing this fly for best results.
