The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
The Best Anglers Never Stop Learning
I’ve had some success getting bonefish to eat the fly, but my landing ratio is terrible. Sometimes I strip-set, feel the weight, and then—nothing. Other times, I hold on for a second, only to have the fish pop off midway through its first run. Am I setting too hard? Not hard enough? What’s the right way to drive the hook home and keep the fish pinned?
Hooking a bonefish is just step one—keeping it pinned is where most anglers struggle. Bonefish have hard, rubbery mouths, and if you don’t drive the hook in properly or maintain the right tension, you’ll lose a lot of fish.
Bonefish are built for speed, so the key to landing them is a solid strip-set, steady pressure, and controlled drag tension. The better you get at managing hook penetration and line control, the higher your landing ratio will be.
