About

The aptly named Gillie Greenberg, known by friends as Gil, has always felt most at home on the water. Growing up in Toronto, Canada, he spent his summers bass fishing with his uncle and father. At age 18, Gil bought his first fly rod to experiment with on his family’s annual walleye trip. Armed with the knowledge one gains from watching hundreds of YouTube videos, Gil managed to land a handful of pike on his first morning with a fly rod. Just like many great fly fishers before him, he was instantly hooked.

Since this first initiation, fly fishing has become a way of life. Gil has caught fish in more than 30 countries, led expeditions to various virgin fisheries, and racked up a species far beyond what he’d ever imagined.

Outside of fly fishing, Gil holds a degree in marine biology, served in the IDF, and lives on a farm in southern Ontario. He brings experience, passion, and leadership to the MidCurrent team.

My favorite part of fishing has nothing to do with catching fish, but learning how they interact with their environment. Whenever I spot a fish, I ask myself, “What is going on in this fish’s mind? Why at this moment in time, in this exact spot, is this particular fish doing what it’s doing?” If I am closer to the answer after a day on the water, I consider the day a success.

Most Memorable Fishing Experience

Most memorable experience: I was chasing permit in southern Belize with my fiance, when we came across an absolutely massive fish knocking over leaves, looking for crabs. I tied a floating crab on Jen’s line, and she put a cast right on him. Bang! Just like that the fish ate . . . only for the crab to come flying right back at us via a massive trout set. She put in another cast, way up current, mended, and somewhat surprisingly, the fish again slurped her fly.

This time she hit him with a solid strip set. The fish U-turned with a violent splash of its tail, raced straight out of the channel we were fishing toward the open ocean. Our engine wouldn’t turn-over, and because we were unable to give chase, the fish had us beat to the spool. I still get the chills thinking about it.
