Tying Recipe
  • Hook: Straight Eye, Standard Wire, 3X Long, Semi-Dropped Point
  • Thread: UTC 70 Denier, Black
  • Tail: Turkey Biots, Brown
  • Body: Peacock Herl
  • Rib: French Tinsel, Silver
  • Thorax: Superfine Dubbing, Tan
  • Legs: Partridge, Natural
  • Casing: Pheasant Tail, Natural

A decent amount of substitutions can be made on this bug, but too many could alter the look of it too much so try to stick with the materials it calls for if possible. That being said, incorporating a few of these won’t hurt a bit.

Tail: Good Biots will get the job done if Turkey is unavailable.

Rib: Silver or Gold Ultra Wire in the correct size respective to what size fly you’re tying would be a fine choice for the ribbing

Legs: Fibers from a Hen Saddle would work fine for legs if Partridge is out of the question.

A Flashback version of the fly is an easy, and effective variation. Just replace the Pheasant Tail casing with Opal Mirage Tinsel or Large Flashabou. Adding a bit of flash can make this a great fly for high water. You can also tie this fly with a bead if you need some extra weight behind it.

This fly can be tied in a wide variety of sizes, making it a wonderful option when trying to imitate almost any species of stonefly. With such versatility, plenty of variations, and simple materials this bug may become your go to stonefly nymph. It has proven itself on many stages throughout the country. Who knows, you may just catch a 20in fish on a 20 Incher!

Stoneflies have a tendency to be near the bottom of the river, so fishing this fly deep in the water column will yield the best results. The beaded version of this fly may be better for swifter, deeper river. The flashback version will be helpful during runoff, and normal river blowouts after rains.
