This is a classic mayfly pattern, that can also work as a general attractor dry fly. It has a very unique look and stature about it, and for that reason substitutions are not really a good idea. Staying true to the recipe on this guy is the best option.

Big variation for this fly aren’t really a thing, but playing around with different colors can work out. Base your color choices on what specific insects are present where you’re fishing. If it is just going to be a general attractor or high country fly, get off the beaten path and tie it in some cool color combos! Multiple sizes are always a good idea when dealing with mayflies because they vary so much from species to species.

This bug floats like a cork, even in turbulent or irregular water. Easy to spot, and the ability to become an imitation for most mayflies is a pretty epic combination. They may be a little time, and effort intensive to tie, but spinning deer hair is a great skill once you get the hang of it. These flies will fool fish all day long, stock up!

This is a great general attractor pattern, especially when mayflies are popping off. It floats very high, making it a great choice for a dry dropper set up. If you’re unsure about the bugs coming off, try this guy. It can imitate lots of things, and the fish are a big fan of it.
